Inspiration:
natural world : landscape : art, artifacts and architecture : galleries

I have always been inspired by natural forms, but often find myself drawn towards objects and structures that many other people think of as frankly rather weird. Distorted tree roots, strange shadows, a piece of crab’s claw – all of these have prompted me to reach for my sketchbook in recent months. Perhaps this fascination with the strangeness of the natural world is what first drew me to the landscape studies of the artist Graham Sutherland; I love the power he can invest in inanimate forms.

“the precarious tension of opposites – happiness and unhappiness, beauty and ugliness, so near the point of balance – are capable of being interpreted according to the predilections of the beholder, as with the taste of bittersweet fruit”.
